Programmatic SEO for SaaS: a practical guide

Updated 2026-08-21 · 9 min read

Programmatic SEO means generating many pages from one template and a dataset. Done well it captures long tail demand no human writer could cover. Done badly it produces thousands of near identical pages that get ignored or deindexed.

The difference is whether each page contains something a visitor cannot get from the template alone.

Pick a template with real variance

  • Category pages

Best tools for X. Works when the list, the ranking and the descriptions genuinely differ per category.

  • Comparison pages

A versus B. Strong intent, but only defensible when you hold data on both sides.

  • Alternative pages

Alternatives to X. High conversion, and reusable across your whole catalogue.

  • Use case pages

X for Y role or Y industry. Works when the workflow described actually changes per segment.

Rules that keep the pages indexable

Give every page a unique title and description. Duplicated metadata across a template is the fastest way to be filtered out of results.

Include data that changes: counts, rankings, prices, dates, upvotes, recent activity. Static prose repeated with a swapped noun is what triggers thin content judgements.

Set a self referencing canonical on every generated page, and never point them all at the homepage. Keep them in the sitemap and link to them from a hub page a human can browse.

Cap the number of generated pages. Publishing a page for every combination of three variables creates index bloat and buries your good pages.

Internal linking is the whole game

Orphan pages do not rank. Each generated page should link up to a hub, sideways to three or four sibling pages, and down to the individual records it lists.

The hub page itself deserves genuine editorial content, because it is the page most likely to earn links.

FAQ

How many programmatic pages should I publish?
Start with twenty to fifty high quality ones. Expand only after you see impressions in Search Console for the first batch.
Will AI written pages rank?
Generation method is not the issue. Pages that repeat what is already on the web rank poorly regardless of who wrote them. Pages carrying your own data can do well.
